We've been working with Bualnaluib Primary School and Kellands Primary School to produce our latest invasive species films!

"Bioboy" - Biosecurity

The pupils from Bualnaluib Primary School made a film about Biosecurity. 17 pupils from the P5-7 class took part in the creation of this film. The film features Bioboy and his friends - Cherry Check, Captain Clean and Daisy Dry. We hear all about biosecurity in Wester Ross and how to protect our natural environment.

The pupils chose the topic and did all the work creating this film - the research, scripts, filming, interviews, animations and musical number! We think they've done a fantastic job - well done!

The school was supported in the project by the Skye and Lochalsh Rivers Trust and film making experts Media Education.

Giant Hogweed

Pupils from the P7 in Kellands Primary School made a film about giant hogweed. In the film the pupils tell the story of how the Victorians brought giant hogweed to Scotland, how it can spread and what we can do to prevent this. We hear all about the health risks to people and how sheep can be used to control it!

The pupils chose the film topic and did all the research, interviews, scripts, animations and filming. We hope you enjoy it as much as we have!

The school was supported in the project by the River Dee Trust and film making experts Media Education.

Both films can also be viewed on our YouTube Channel. You can to find out more and watch all the films from our school filming project here.

Screening at the Highland Climate Festival

The Biosecurity film by Bualnaluib Primary School was recently screened as part of the Highland Climate Festival. Climate action films made by local pupils were screened at the GALE centre in Gairloch.

Fiona MacKenzie, Community Outreach Co-ordinator at Aberdeen Science Centre, organised the event and commented on the skills the pupils had gained from the invasive species filming project.

"The ‘Climate Emergency’ film the pupils made would not have been possible without the skills they had gained from making the Bioboy film. The kids were let loose with two cameras and had less than an hour including planning and filming, and with minimal direction they just knew what to do and produced something to be proud of. I was very impressed with their skills and focus to get the job done. Also, as a parent of one of the Bioboy film crew I think that knowledge of invasive species is just the tip of the iceberg of the learning that has been achieved with this filming project."
