Title

Scottish Invasive Species Initiative extension

We are delighted to announce that we are extending our project by an additional year!

The extra year will allow us to continue our work with communities and volunteers on invasive species management and control until October 2022.  Our funders, the National Lottery Heritage Fund and lead partner NatureScot, were both supportive of the extension beyond the original October 2021 end date - recognising that the extra year will allow us to provide significant benefits to native biodiversity, the environment and for local people and volunteers.

Our project team will be retained for an extra year and we will recruit seasonal staff again in 2022.  We will carry on providing local volunteering opportunities in our conservation work and continue our work to support people to gain skills, qualifications and experience relating to undertaking invasive plant control.  The mink control project - which has established a dedicated network of volunteers running over 400 rafts and traps which have caught 388 mink over the last three years - will also continue and be supported.  We are also very pleased to be able to continue delivery of educational projects to schools ensuring local pupils don’t miss out on learning opportunities – most of which had to be suspended last year due to the pandemic.

Everyone in the Scottish Invasive Species Initiative partnership – NatureScot, ten rivers and fishery trusts and boards and the University of Aberdeen – is very pleased with this news.  Another year for everyone to get involved in the project – so join us!
